What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Lung cancer is caused due to uncontrolled rapid growth of cells in tissues which cluster together to form a tumor. As these tumors grow they undermine the lung’s ability to provide the bloodstream with oxygen. There are two types of tumor in lungs. Benign tumors are the tumors that remain in one place and do not appear to spread further in the lungs. Malignant tumors are dangerous tumors that spread to other parts of the body through lymphatic system or bloodstream. Metastasis refers to cancer spreading beyond its site of origin to other parts of the body. When the cancer spreads it is much harder to treat successfully.
There are different types of lung cancer:-
Primary lung cancer: – Primary lung cancer originates in the lungs.
Secondary lung cancer: – Secondary lung cancer can originate anywhere in the body and reaches the lungs.

Causes of lung cancer
Lung cancer occurs when a lung cell’s gene mutation makes the cell unable to correct DNA damage. Mutations can occur for a variety of reasons. Most lung cancers are the result of inhaling carcinogenic substances.
- Exposure to radon gas.
- Air pollution.

- Lung disease in past.
- Lowered immunity.
- Past cancer treatment.

- Previous smoking related cancers.
Treatment for lung cancer
Treatments for lung cancer depend on the stage, size of the tumor, type of cancer cells and its spread within the lung. Following are the main treatment for lung cancer:-
Surgery: – The surgery is performed with an aim to remove the part of the lung that contains cancer. Surgery is commonly performed for non-small cell lung cancer. The surgeon recommends surgery to patients only in case if the tumor is found in one lung of the lymph nodes. In the surgical procedure the entire lung, lobe or a small section of the lung can be removed.
Chemotherapy: – Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to cure or control cancer. Many lung cancer patients receive a combination of two or three chemotherapy drugs. Chemotherapy is usually given after the surgery if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. Chemotherapy helps in reducing the risk of cancer recurrence. Chemotherapy can also be given before or after radiotherapy and surgery.
Biological therapy: – Biological therapies are also called targeted therapies. Biological therapy uses the body’s immune system to treat cancer. The tumors are tested to see whether they respond to a particular biological therapy is called molecular testing. Molecular testing allows the doctors to provide surgeons with details such as articular mutations in the DNA of the tumor and particular proteins in the tumor.
Radiotherapy: – Radiation therapy uses procedure powerful source of energies such as X-rays is used to kill cancer cells that are left behind after the surgery. The therapy shrinks large tumors before an operation so that they can be removed more easily. Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy are usually combined after the surgery to reduce the risk of recurring cancer in the area
