What is Heart Bypass surgery?
Heart bypass surgery is also referred as coronary artery bypass surgery. Heart bypass surgery is performed to replace the damaged arteries in the heart. This is a surgical procedure that diverts the flow of blood around a section of a blocked or partially blocked an artery in the heart which is done by creating a new pathway to the heart. Coronary heart bypass surgery improves blood flow to the heart muscle. While performing a coronary bypass surgery a healthy blood vessel is taken from the patient’s chest, legs or arms. The blood vessel is connected to the other arteries in the heart so that blood bypasses the diseased or blocked area.
Who needs heart bypass surgery?
Heart bypass surgery is recommended by the surgeons if the patient is suffering from the following heart diseases such as:-
- Patients suffering from coronary artery diseases.
- Severe chest pain caused by narrowing of several arteries.
- The coronary artery is severely narrowed or blocked.
- Patients who have a blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries.
- Patients who have one or more of the coronary arteries that are partly or totally blocked.
- Heart bypass surgery may also be performed in emergency situations, such as a heart attack, and if the patient is not responding to other treatments.
How is heart bypass surgery performed?
Prior to surgery, the patients receive anesthesia. The surgeons make an incision in the middle of the patient’s chest. The incision made exposes the heart. Generally, the surgery is performed with minimally invasive techniques which involve smaller cuts. The patients are hooked up to heart-lung machine. The heart-lung machine circulates oxygenated blood through the body while the surgeon operates the heart. In some cases, the surgery is also performed without heart-lung machine. In the surgical procedure, the surgeon removes the healthy blood vessel from inside the chest wall or leg. The healthy blood vessel is implanted to replace the blocked or damaged artery. When the procedure is completed the heart-lung machine is removed. After the machine is removed the function of the bypass will be checked. Once it starts working properly the cardiac surgeon stitched up, bandaged the incision.
Following are some of the risks included in the surgery:-
- Silent Heart attack
- Heart rhythm problems
- Kidney failure
- Mood swings
- Lung failure
- Low fever
- Chest pain
- Memory loss
