Dysphagia basically is a swallowing disorder which is caused due to various medical conditions. Involving regions like oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus and gastroesophageal junction, dysphagia typically affects the swallowing function of the person. Causes of Dysphagia

Swallowing is a very complex function which involves a number of conditions capable of interfering with the process. However, dysphagia generally falls into a main category known as esophageal dysphagia which refers to sensation of food getting stuck up in the base of throat or in chest following swallowing. Most common causes of esophageal dysphagia include esophageal tumors, esophageal stricture, diffuse spasm producing multiple high pressure in the region & achalasia involving the lower esophageal sphincter. Other causes of esophageal dysphagia include presence of foreign bodies which partially block the throat or esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), narrowing of the esophageal ring & Eosinophillic esophagitis which relates to food allergies. Radiation therapy which is commonly applied for cancer treatments nowadays can also lead to inflammation & scarring of esophagus. Apart from this scleroderma which develops scar-like tissue can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter and allow acid back up into esophagus so as to cause frequent heartburns.
